The clatter of dice.
A solitary gunshot.
No daring escape.
The clatter of dice.
A solitary gunshot.
No daring escape.
The central image is a table where luck and violence sit side by side. Dice open the poem with sound only, a rattle that promises games, chances, choices still in motion. Then the gunshot lands as its blunt counterpart, another kind of chance resolved instantly and without ceremony. The turn between line one and line two is the whole poem's engine: play collapsing into consequence in the space of a breath.
That third line refuses the reader's hope outright. No daring escape isn't a twist so much as a door quietly closing. There's a noir chill to it, the mood of a story that skips the chase scene because everyone already knows how it ends.
What compression buys here is silence. Nothing is explained, no names, no room, no reason. The gap between the clatter and the shot is where the reader's imagination does the work, and rereading only tightens that hush.
