Couch co-op

Couch co-op is a way of playing a video game together with other people sitting in the same room and sharing one screen, rather than connecting over the internet.

The name comes from the living room couch where players sit. Classic couch co-op games give every player a controller and split the work or the screen between them. Strictly, co-op means working together against the game, while versus modes pit players against each other, but people often use the term for any same-room play.

It has made a comeback because it is social in a way online play is not. You can see each other's faces, pass snacks and trash-talk in person, and a stronger player can coach a newer one in real time. Phone-as-controller games make it easier still, because nobody needs a console controller of their own.

A related term is local multiplayer, the wider family that covers co-op and versus play on one device or in one room. If you want a couch game with no console, the party games on Bossfeed run in a TV browser and use phones. Some also let a solo player try them against bots.
