Coco by the fire.
Outside howls winter's embrace.
Christmas with loved ones.

📖 About this haiku

There's a lovely warmth-cold trade at the center of this one. That first line settles you right into the mug, the fire, the small circle of light before anything else happens. Then winter shows up not as weather but as something with a voice — it howls, it embraces, which is a nice bit of sleight of hand, borrowing a word we'd expect for the people inside and giving it to the storm outside instead. That's the turn: the cold gets tenderness, and it makes the warmth feel earned rather than assumed.

By the time the last line arrives, "loved ones" doesn't need decoration. The poem has already done the work of contrast, so the closing line can just be plain and quiet, which is its own kind of gift. Nothing here overstays. It trusts three small pictures to hold a whole feeling of shelter, and that restraint is exactly why it lingers.
