Secret portals hidden,
A trip to another land.
They know what awaits.
Secret portals hidden,
A trip to another land.
They know what awaits.
The central image does a nice sleight of hand: portals that are secret, yet knowable enough to be waiting for someone. That's the quiet turn between the first line and the third. Line one hides, line two moves, line three reveals that the movement was never mysterious to whoever "they" are — only to us, reading after the fact. The mood is hushed and a little eerie, like stepping into a story already in progress, and there's a faint fairy-tale season-feeling, the kind of light you get in old woodland illustrations rather than any actual month.
What the compression earns is withheld agency. We never learn who "they" are or what awaits, and the poem doesn't need to say — the confidence in that final line carries the weight. Reading it twice, the portals stop feeling secret at all; they feel like an invitation we simply weren't given yet.
