Standard issue shovels
Hastily dug trenches in chilled rain
No rest for the damned.

📖 About this haiku

There's a nice grinding sameness in "standard issue" that does a lot of work up front — it tells you these aren't heroes with named weapons, they're interchangeable bodies handed interchangeable tools. The second line pushes that further with "hastily," so the labor itself feels like an afterthought, something squeezed in before the next disaster. Chilled rain gives you the season without naming one, that late-autumn or early-winter bite that has nothing to do with holidays and everything to do with mud and cold hands.

Then the closing line lands as flat statement rather than lament, which is the real turn — no metaphor, no flourish, just exhaustion stated plainly. That plainness after two lines of physical detail is what makes it stick. It reads like something overheard, not composed, and that's the trick worth returning to.
