grave mistakes; unknown.
eternal memories; unforgotten.
chains lead to the past.
grave mistakes; unknown.
eternal memories; unforgotten.
chains lead to the past.
There's a nice friction at the heart of this one: mistakes that go unknown sitting right beside memories that are impossible to forget. That contrast does the real work here, the poem turning on what we lose track of versus what refuses to let go. The final image, chains leading to the past, gathers both threads into something physical and a little haunted, less a metaphor than a sensation of being tethered.
No season announces itself, but the mood carries its own weather, something autumnal in the way it lingers over what can't be undone. The compression forces each phrase to hold more than its size suggests; "unforgotten" especially earns a second look, since it insists on presence rather than simply denying absence. Read again and the three lines stop feeling sequential and start feeling simultaneous, like one long exhale about memory's stubbornness.
