The trick here is following charcoal through its whole little life story instead of picturing it as one fixed thing. Fresh out of the bag, it's black, plain and simple, the color everyone pictures when they hear the word. But strike a match and toss it on the grill, and it transforms — glowing that deep orange-red as it burns, doing its actual job of cooking dinner. That's the misdirection: you assume something used stays looking like itself, so red catches you off guard. Then the final twist: once the fire's done and the coal has burned all the way out, it collapses into pale gray ash, close enough to white that the riddle claims it.
