Write about a birth in your family.
Your move, writer.
Write about a birth in your family.
Your move, writer.
There's the story everyone already knows by heart, the one told at reunions with exact details — the blizzard, the wrong hospital, the uncle who fainted — where your job is just to get the timing and the punchlines right. Then there's the quieter version: not the birth itself but the hours around it, the waiting room, the phone call at 3 a.m., the grandmother pacing a hallway in another state. You could write from a child's blurry half-memory of a sibling arriving, all confusion and sudden furniture in the house. Or skip backward entirely and imagine the birth you weren't there for and never will be — your own, or a grandparent's, built from secondhand details and a little invented weather. Small facts carry it: a name almost chosen, a coat left behind, the first thing someone said.
