Figure out the big five of your story to really make it sing: 1.) Characters 2.) Relationships 3.) Trouble 4.) Decisions 5.) Consequences
This works because stories aren't really about events, they're about pressure on people. Characters give you someone to care about, relationships give that person something to lose, trouble applies the pressure, decisions reveal who they actually are under it, and consequences make those decisions matter. Skip any one piece and the story goes slack. Say you're writing about a kid who finds a lost dog. The dog isn't the story. The story is the kid's shaky friendship with a neighbor, the trouble of the dog's real owner showing up, the choice to tell the truth or stay quiet, and what that choice costs or earns. The caution: don't force all five into every scene like a checklist. Some moments just need a character breathing. Let the structure guide you, not cage you.
