Battle royale

A battle royale is a game format in which many players start at the same time, compete in a shrinking space or against rising pressure, and are eliminated one by one until a single player or team remains.

The name comes from a 1999 Japanese novel, Battle Royale, by Koushun Takami, later adapted into a film. As a video game format it took off in the late 2010s with games such as PUBG and Fortnite, where a large crowd of players lands on one map and a closing storm forces them together.

The structure is what matters. A large field creates variety, the shrinking arena guarantees an ending, and eliminations create drama. In party-sized versions the map is small and bots often fill the empty places, so a match is never short of competition.

Surviversus on Bossfeed is a cartoon survival battle royale. Its public Royale mode drops you into a match of 30 players, where you farm monsters, stack power-ups and outlive a closing storm. Humans and bots share the arena, and private rooms are there for friends.
