distant vista, blue mountain cold
frozen pond, ice reflects loneliness
Heart desires the coming spring.
The central image does a lot of quiet work: a vista widens the eye outward, then the poem pulls it down into a single frozen pond, and that pond becomes a mirror for feeling rather than just scenery. That's the turn — from looking at the world to seeing yourself in it. The ice holding "loneliness" is the hinge of the whole piece; it transforms cold weather into cold feeling without ever naming the speaker's situation directly.
Then the final line breaks the stillness open. After two lines of frozen, mirrored, closed-in imagery, "heart desires the coming spring" introduces motion and time — winter isn't just weather here, it's a holding pattern the heart is waiting out.
What rewards rereading is how spare it stays while doing that much — mountain, pond, ice, and longing, each image earning its place, nothing explained twice.
