Start with the remote in his hand freezing mid-click, because that small detail of stillness will sell the wrongness before anything else does. One path plays it as uncanny comedy: the anchor keeps breaking format to nag Nick about his life choices, the newsroom behind her slowly catching on that something's addressing the living room directly, and Carol turns out to be his sister who's been trying to reach him for three days about something delightfully mundane. Another road goes quietly eerie: the broadcast is a rerun, Carol died last spring, and the television seems to know something Nick hasn't let himself admit yet. Or play it tender and real — no tricks, just Nick finally recognizing that the universe, or his own conscience wearing a news anchor's face, is done letting him avoid a call he's needed to make for weeks.
