Answer: Charcoal
The trick here is that it walks you through a little life story in colors, and charcoal happens to live that story from start to finish. Fresh off the fire, lumps of charcoal are black and sooty, nothing surprising there. But once you actually use it — toss it into the grill and get it burning — it glows a deep, living red, which feels like a plot twist if you're picturing a crayon or a stick of something that stays one color forever. Then, once the fire's done its work and the heat fades, you're left with pale gray-white ash. So the riddle isn't describing three different objects, just one, caught at three different moments. The misdirection is assuming color has to be fixed, when here it's really tracking a transformation through use.
