📖 Notes & analysis

Shame makes a habit feel real because it shows the character judging themselves by a standard they haven't met, and that gap between self-image and behavior is where personality lives. A knight who prays loudly before every battle but secretly still bites his nails raw in private tells you more about his fear than any speech could. The habit doesn't need to be dramatic; it needs to embarrass him specifically, given who he's trying to be. The caution: don't let the shame become the character's whole personality, trotted out every scene like a tic for the reader to notice. Let it surface once, maybe twice, in moments of real pressure, then trust that the reader remembers it's there. Restraint keeps it human instead of turning it into a costume.
