Brain teaser

A brain teaser is a short puzzle or question that looks simple at first but needs a change of viewpoint, a bit of logic or a sharp look at the wording to solve.

The category is broad. Riddles, lateral thinking puzzles, number and pattern questions, optical illusions and small logic problems all get called brain teasers. What they share is the moment of seeing it differently, and that moment is the reward. A brain teaser rarely needs special knowledge. It needs you to question the assumption you made in the first five seconds.

Three habits help. Read the wording again, because the trick is often in a word you skipped. Write the facts down, since holding them in your head is where people lose track. And if you are stuck, ask what you have assumed that the puzzle never said.

Brain teasers are short, so they work well as a daily habit and a conversation starter. Bossfeed's daily riddle is the plainest example, and the daily logic puzzles are the longer cousins.
