Game night

A game night is a regular get-together where friends or family spend an evening playing board games, card games or video games together.

The appeal is the ritual. A fixed evening, a few snacks and a stack of games turn into something people look forward to. Hosts who keep game nights going tend to follow a few habits. They start with something easy that anyone can join, move to bigger games once the room warms up, and keep a backup that works for any number of people.

Mix the types of game across the night: a bluffing game for laughs, a drawing game for noise, a board game for the competitive ones. Keep each game under half an hour so no one is stuck. Include a way for latecomers to jump in, and avoid games that eliminate people early.

A TV and everyone's phones are enough for a good night with no box to buy. Our guide covers setting one up from scratch.
